Directions

From the Deutscher Peter inn, walk a few minutes up the state highway until a marked hiking trail branches off to the left (marker “603”). Continue uphill—the cart path soon becomes a hiking trail—until you reach a forest road; from here, follow trail marker 639. Turn right briefly, then return to the hiking trail (always following the markers) until you reach the Eselsattel (1,175 m). Descend on the other side to the former “Franzbauer” estate. Walk downhill between the houses on the marked trail until you reach the road leading to the former Male Inn. Shortly past this (at a sign), leave the paved road to the right again and follow the hiking trail marked “Koschutahaus/KGW (Carinthian Border Trail) 647.” Follow these signs. About 45 minutes of steep uphill hiking—partly on forest and cart tracks—to a narrow paved road near the “Travnik” farmstead. Follow this road uphill to its end (watch for trail markers) to the Malle farmstead, the former “Skarbina” inn; turn right onto the dirt road across the meadow, and at the end of the meadow, take the forest road to the right until just before the Malealm. In a right-hand curve, turn left uphill (marker) toward the alpine pasture. Cross the pasture and continue steeply uphill along the hiking trail through a beech forest to the Pischenzasattel (1,392 m). Continue following the markers beneath the rocky cliffs of the Koschuta. Cross the scree fields directly below them—finally using a wire rope to get around a rocky outcrop (sure-footedness required; snow gullies persist well into the summer)—to a forested ridge.
Descend this ridge to the left until you reach a fork in the trail. Now head steeply downhill to the right for 10 minutes to the Koschuta Hut (1,280 m).

NOTE: This stage requires hikers with alpine experience, including experience navigating scree fields and a correspondingly surefooted gait.

Safety instructions

The trail is well-marked and in good condition. Nevertheless, the traverse from Pischenzasattel to the Koschutahaus is high-alpine in character and requires sure-footedness and a head for heights (short sections with wire ropes). Caution: Even in summer, you may still need to cross snow gullies; an ice axe and/or crampons may be necessary!

10 Recommendations from the ÖAV

As a nature-based sport, mountain hiking offers great opportunities for health, camaraderie, and adventure. The following recommendations from alpine clubs are intended to make mountain hikes as safe and enjoyable as possible.

1. Stay Healthy in the Mountains
Mountain hiking is an endurance sport. The positive physical benefits for the heart and circulatory system require good health and a realistic self-assessment. Avoid rushing and set a pace so that no one in the group gets out of breath.

2. Careful Planning
Hiking maps, guidebooks, the internet, and experts provide information on distance, elevation gain, difficulty, and current conditions. Always tailor your route to the group! Pay special attention to the weather forecast, as rain, wind, and cold increase the risk of accidents.

3. Complete Gear
Tailor your gear to your hike and keep your backpack as light as possible. Always pack rain gear, cold-weather gear, and sun protection, as well as a first-aid kit and a cell phone (European emergency number 112). A map or GPS can help with navigation.

4. Proper footwear
Good hiking boots protect your feet, reduce strain, and improve your footing! When choosing boots, look for a perfect fit, a non-slip treaded sole, waterproofing, and a lightweight design.

5. Sure-footedness is key
Falls resulting from slipping or tripping are the most common cause of accidents! Keep in mind that walking too fast or feeling tired can severely impair your sure-footedness and concentration. Watch out for falling rocks: By walking carefully, you can avoid dislodging rocks.

6. Stay on marked trails
In off-trail terrain, the risk of getting lost, falling, and rockfall increases. Avoid taking shortcuts, and return to the last known point if you stray from the trail. Often underestimated and very dangerous: steep fields of old snow!

7. Take regular breaks
Taking breaks at the right time allows you to rest, enjoy the scenery, and socialize. Food and drink are necessary to maintain performance and concentration. Isotonic drinks are ideal for quenching thirst. Granola bars, dried fruit, and cookies satisfy hunger while on the go.

8. Responsibility for Children
Keep in mind that variety and playful exploration are the top priorities for children! In sections with a risk of falling, one adult can supervise only one child. Highly exposed routes that require sustained concentration are not suitable for children.

9. Small Groups
Small groups ensure flexibility and allow for mutual assistance. Inform trusted individuals of your destination, route

,

and return time. Stay together as a group. Warning to solo hikers: Even minor incidents can lead to serious emergencies.

10. Respect for Nature and the Environment
To protect the mountain environment: Do not leave trash behind, avoid making noise, stay on the trails, do not disturb wildlife or grazing animals, leave plants untouched, and respect protected areas. Use public transportation or carpool to get there.
