Directions

Just south of the Koschutahaus, the trail toward “Koschutnikturm/Lärchenturm/KGW” begins. Follow it uphill through a beautiful forest—passing the turnoff to the Lärchenturm on your right—for 30 minutes to the Meiniksattel (1,484 m). Continue following the “KGW” signs to the right uphill until you reach the scree field below the Koschutnikturm. At its lower end, cross the scree field via a trail up to the small Wiltze Saddle between the Koschutnik Tower and the small peak “Wiltzespitze” (about 1,720 m; Caution: 10 m past the sign, do not follow the arrow uphill, but continue straight across toward the “Ost” marker). Afterward, cross the impressive scree slopes—which can be somewhat arduous (extreme caution is advised in some places when there is snow)—at times passing very close beneath the massive rock faces of the Dicken Koschuta (Tolsta Košuta), always following the “KGW/Potoksattel” marker until you reach the final rocks.
Now descend through wooded terrain to a fork in the trail. Here, continue straight ahead toward the Potoksattel (1,411 m; about 3 hours to this point). Partly exposed (always heading toward “Ghf. Franzl/KGW”) on a steep trail through the woods, crossing just below the summits of the Kalischnikturm and Reschounikturm (two small, wooded, rugged peaks). Between these two peaks, a trail leads down to the left (signposted “Schaidasattel”). Follow this narrow trail down through a beautiful but steep forest to the chapel at the Meleschniksattel “Sedelce.” From here, continue along the forest road for about 250 meters until a path with a wooden railing leads uphill to the right. Follow this path uphill for a few meters, then continue downhill along a beautiful hiking trail, following the markings—past the Pamenutius Chapel—to the Schaidasattel. From here, take the paved road downhill for 45 minutes to Zell-Terkl and the Terklbauer Inn.

NOTE: This stage is intended for hikers experienced in alpine terrain who are accustomed to navigating scree fields and have a firm footing.

Safety instructions

Some of the trails and paths are narrow and slightly exposed, requiring sure-footedness, but they are well marked. A few large cirques are challenging, but generally easy to traverse. In between, there are several gullies and secured sections where extreme caution is advised, especially when there is snow. In rainy conditions, caution is advised on the “Potoksattel–Sedlce” section: steep forest terrain in places!

10 Recommendations from the ÖAV

As an outdoor sport, mountain hiking offers great opportunities for health, camaraderie, and adventure. The following recommendations from the alpine clubs are intended to make mountain hikes as safe and enjoyable as possible.

1. Staying Healthy in the Mountains
Mountain hiking is an endurance sport. The positive physical benefits for the heart and circulatory system require good health and a realistic assessment of your own abilities. Avoid rushing and choose a pace that ensures no one in the group gets out of breath.

2. Careful Planning
Hiking maps, guidebooks, the internet, and experts provide information on distance, elevation gain, difficulty, and current conditions. Always tailor your route to the group! Pay special attention to the weather forecast, as rain, wind, and cold increase the risk of accidents.

3. Complete Gear
Adapt your gear to your outing and make sure your backpack is as light as possible. Protection from rain, cold, and sun should always be in your backpack, as should a first-aid kit and a cell phone (European emergency number 112). A map or GPS helps with navigation.

4. Proper Footwear
Good hiking boots protect and support your feet and improve your footing! When choosing boots, look for a perfect fit, a non-slip treaded sole, waterproofing, and a lightweight design.

5. Sure-footedness is key
Falls resulting from slipping or tripping are the most common cause of accidents! Keep in mind that walking too fast or being tired can significantly impair your sure-footedness and concentration. Watch out for falling rocks: Walk carefully to avoid dislodging rocks.

6. Stay on marked trails
In terrain without trails, the risk of getting lost, falling, and rockfall increases. Avoid shortcuts and return to the last known point if you stray from the trail. Often underestimated and very dangerous: steep old snowfields!

7. Take regular breaks
Timely breaks allow for rest, enjoying the scenery, and socializing. Food and drink are necessary to maintain performance and concentration. Isotonic beverages are ideal for quenching thirst. Granola bars, dried fruit, and cookies satisfy hunger while on the go.

8. Responsibility for Children
Keep in mind that variety and playful exploration are the top priorities for children! In sections with a risk of falling, one adult can only supervise one child. Very exposed routes that require sustained concentration are not suitable for children.

9. Small Groups
Small groups ensure flexibility and allow for mutual assistance. Inform trusted individuals of your destination, route

,

and return time. Stay together as a group. Warning to solo hikers: Even minor incidents can lead to serious emergencies.

10. Respect for Nature and the Environment
To protect the mountain environment: Do not leave trash behind, avoid noise, stay on the trails, do not disturb wildlife or grazing animals, leave plants untouched, and respect protected areas. Use public transportation or carpool to get there.
